Social Isolation and Companion Animal Summit

Social Media Toolkit

Despite an increasingly connected world, loneliness and social isolation are growing concerns – recognized in society and felt across all demographics.

Public health experts have described loneliness as being at epidemic levels.

This persistent loneliness has serious health consequences.

Lonely people are more likely to suffer from dementia, heart disease and depression and loneliness has been shown to be as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes per day, making it even more dangerous than obesity.

There is widespread agreement between both pet owners and non-owners, that pets can play a role in helping address the societal challenge of loneliness and social isolation. In fact, a Mars Petcare and Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) survey of 2,000 people in the U.S. found 85 percent of respondents believe human-animal interaction (HAI) can help reduce loneliness and 80 percent of pet owners said their pet makes them feel less lonely.

In May 2019, HABRI and Mars Petcare partnered to host the first-ever Summit on Social Isolation & Companion Animals to explore the role pets can play in addressing loneliness in today’s society. The Summit convened a broad cross-section of experts to explore how pets can serve as a potential antidote to loneliness.

Working closely with a consortium of experts in human and animal health, HABRI and Mars Petcare recently released a report, Addressing the Social Isolation & Loneliness Epidemic with the Power of Companion Animals, which outlines a roadmap for furthering research, removing barriers to access pets for those experiencing loneliness, and driving best practices and solutions to fully understand how HAI may be an answer to the loneliness and social isolation epidemic.
